US Senator John Fetterman is hospitalized for depression treatment. “John Fetterman has suffered from depression all his life, but it has only gotten worse in recent weeks,” the Democratic office said Thursday. The 53-year-old was therefore voluntarily admitted to Walter Reed Military Hospital in Bethesda near the American capital Washington after medical advice.
Fetterman won congressional elections in the embattled state of Pennsylvania in November in the US senate election – securing a seat in the Washington House of Representatives for his party. The left-wing local politician was considered a special candidate in his party with his tattoos and typical hooded sweatshirt. Fetterman suffered a stroke last year. Republicans had therefore repeatedly attacked him for his health during the election campaign.
Major depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. It is estimated that 21 million adults in the country will experience at least one major depressive episode in 2020. This corresponds to more than eight percent of all adults in the US. (sda/dpa)
