In the affair surrounding the discovery of classified government documents, the FBI searched the University of Delaware for classified documents of US President Biden.

The broadcaster CNN reports this on Wednesday, citing people close to the investigation. There would have been two searches that took place in consultation with Biden’s lawyers. Documents were secured in two different places, but none had a secret note, he said. The FBI is examining the files.

In recent weeks, confidential documents from earlier years in Biden’s administration have repeatedly appeared in Biden’s private rooms — in offices in Washington and his home in Wilmington, including in the garage there. In early February, however, no other classified documents were found during a search of Biden’s weekend home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

For the Democratic president, the revelations are highly politically sensitive: He will not be allowed to privately store confidential government documents after leaving office. In the US, the National Archives are responsible for this. Biden served as Vice President to President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.

Secret documents have also been found in the past with former President Donald Trump and his Vice President Mike Pence. That is why special investigators were deployed against Trump and Biden. In Trump’s case, investigators believe he may have committed a criminal offense in connection with the documents, according to media reports.

Biden and the White House have been heavily criticized for their information policies in this case. The public only found out about some of the finds when the media reported them. Biden had previously sharply criticized his Republican predecessor Donald Trump for taking home classified documents.

The first tranche of confidential documents at Biden had already been discovered on November 2 – shortly before the important congressional elections. The White House emphasizes that Biden’s lawyers immediately informed the National Archives. However, the public did not find out until January when the broadcaster CBS reported on it. (sda/dpa)
