An incident earlier this week shows just how problematic the US government’s continued ignorance of the mysterious objects shot down over the North American continent is.
The US Air Force intercepted four Russian aircraft near Alaska on Monday. Such maneuvers are considered routine near the northernmost state of the US and, as over the Baltic Sea in Europe, usually do not pose an immediate threat. .
In their own estimation, they believe “that this Russian flight activity is in no way related to the recent operations of Norad and the United States Northern Command related to the flying objects over North America in the past two weeks”. Because the Soviet Union already had a well-developed balloon program, suspicions have recently been louder that Russia could also be behind the objects.

Shoot and exclude
Today, everything in Washington, including Russia, is at risk of being associated with the three yet unknown flying objects that were shot down. The unrest is growing, but the president is still silent. Joe Biden only allows through his spokesman that more and more causes for the unexplained phenomenon are ruled out. But because so far we only know where the objects probably do not come from, the political situation is also becoming increasingly dire. Not knowing what is happening in your own skies – that shakes the self-image of a superpower and that of its commander-in-chief.
Recently published recordings of the radio traffic of those fighter pilots who shot down the last object yet over Lake Huron show how great the ignorance apparently really is. It was published on the military specialized website “The War Zone”.
It is striking that even the pilots probably had trouble describing the object clearly. “I wouldn’t really call it a balloon…I don’t know what…I can see it there with my eyes,” said one of the pilots. “It looks like something … some kind of object that has blown up … it’s hard to tell, it’s quite small.” In the end, however, one of the pilots made up his mind and said, “I call it a balloon.”
The pilots kept discussing the size, which corresponded to that of a small car. In addition, there would have been “threads” hanging from the bottom of the object. The apparently indefinable, floating object would have been metallic, dark or black. Fictitious images of the shape of the object, described as octagonal, are already circulating on social networks.
The nervousness is increasing day by day
Investigations by the authorities and secret services are still ongoing. In Canada, too, the evaluation of the wreckage shot down by the Americans is still awaited. Aliens will not have been the authors. Joe Biden’s spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, ruled out this least likely variant on Monday.

Unlike the balloon shot down earlier, China should also not be behind the flying objects, it was said on Tuesday. And even private companies and research institutions are apparently excluded. At least it is said that no one has turned to the White House and said, These things are ours.
However, the US government has not yet ruled out Russia as a place of origin. According to “The War Zone,” the Russian military also operates unpowered airships from Klyukhi Air Force Base, in the far east of the Kamchatka Peninsula, some 2,000 kilometers away, so relatively close to Alaska. However, there is also no evidence of a Russian origin for the unknown flying objects over North America.
But whoever is behind the phenomenon, if the goal was to create nervousness, it has been extremely successful so far. Even a major environmental disaster in the state of Ohio, caused by a train laden with chemicals that derailed in early February, barely manages to quell the UFO questions from the capital’s press.
“We just don’t know yet,” Biden’s spokeswoman tried to appease again. They just wanted to protect air traffic. At the same time, she said that the president was of course “very involved” in the matter. That didn’t sound reassuring, even though this hint was meant to show leadership.
Crowded to the ground because of a threat in the air
Ironically, the unknown objects seem to bring together notoriously politically divided Washington. According to US media reports, US senators from both parties have criticized the government’s information policy in a classified briefing. The Biden administration needs significantly more transparency so that the public understands what is happening in the sky.
There has been as much communication about this in recent days as about few other subjects. But at press conferences and in statements, the Department of Defense, National Security Advisory spokesman John Kirby, the White House spokeswoman, or even Secretary of State Antony Blinken haven’t been able to provide much clarity.
Democrat and Republican senators also complain that the incumbent UFO chapter at the Pentagon is consistently underfunded. “This is essential for national security. We need to know what threats we’re facing, we need to know the resources and technologies of our opponents,” said New York Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. She has the support of Republican Marco Rubio from Florida, who has been dealing with the issue for years.
The White House now wants to put together its own team to investigate the unknown objects in the sky and their possible security risks. It is said to reside directly with National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and should have access to existing structures in the Pentagon, Department of the Interior and other agencies.
According to statements by US officials, “a host of options for future incidents” are currently being discussed. Slow-moving unmanned aerial vehicles can also be used to combat them, or naval-launchable missiles.
President Joe Biden was first informed of unknown flight phenomena in June 2021. Domestic political pressure now seems to have grown large enough. More than a year and a half later, there should finally be movement – not only in the air, but also on the ground.
