The number of unauthorized entries into Germany via Switzerland has increased fivefold. Inflation in Switzerland rose to 3.3 percent in January due to rising electricity prices

The number of unauthorized entries into Germany via Switzerland has increased more than fivefold in a very short time. From the first to the second half of 2022, the number increased from 1,610 to 8,862, the German newspaper ‘Bild’ reports on Tuesday.

The “Bild” referred to a response from the German Interior Ministry to a request from the AfD. The head of the German Federal Police Union (DPoIG), Heiko Teggatz, called the numbers unsurprising. “Rejections such as at the Austrian border are not possible with the Swiss,” he told the newspaper. “The Federal Ministry of the Interior still refuses to register border controls with Switzerland with the EU and is deliberately shifting responsibility to the federal states and municipalities.”

The state of Baden-Württemberg is particularly affected by illegal entry via Switzerland. The German FDP country leader Hans-Ulrich Rülke therefore called for more border controls – also on the Swiss side. The country border must be “better protected against illegal migration on the Swiss side”. “This protection does not appear to exist at this time.” (sda/afp)
