David Jude Jolicoeur has been performing under his stage name Trugoy the Dove since the 1980s and enjoyed success with his rap band De La Soul. Now surprisingly sad news is doing the rounds: the 54-year-old has passed away.

This was confirmed by the band’s spokesman, Tony Ferguson, to the American broadcaster CNN. He describes the artist’s death in the telephone conversation as a “great loss”. He gave no cause of death. Musician Pharell Williams is publicly mourning the deceased, saying on Twitter: “Sending love, light and positive feelings to his family, The Soul and everyone whose lives have been touched by his existence.”

Jolicoeur’s career began in the 1980s when he formed the musical trio De La Soul with high school friends Vincent Manson aka Pasemaster Mase and Kelvin Mercer aka Posdnuos. In 1989 they released their debut album. Their songs include hits like “The Magic Number”, “Exe Know” or “Me Myself and I”.

The musicians have been nominated for six Grammy Awards for their work, including one in 2006. Their latest album was released in 2016, with concerts in the UK set to begin on April 8 this year.
