Tens of thousands of teachers from all over Portugal took to the streets in Lisbon on Saturday for higher wages and better working conditions. As the teachers’ union Fenprof announced, more than 150,000 people took part in the protest rally.
It was probably the largest demonstration by teachers in Portugal’s history, Secretary-General Mario Nogueira said.
“We are outraged,” said Augusto Figueiredo, a technology teacher from Rio Maior, about a hundred kilometers north of Lisbon, who complained of “miserable salaries” and “inhumane working hours”. “We are really tired,” said sports teacher Joao Tristao. “No one listens to us, this government has to listen to us.”
The teachers demand, among other things, better career opportunities and higher salaries to compensate for the high inflation. In order to get their demands through, teachers in Portugal have demonstrated and gone on strike several times, which has also led to school closures. (sda/afp)
