With his album “Harry’s House”, the 29-year-old won the award in the main category “Album of the Year” at the awards ceremony on Saturday night in London, just like a week ago at the Grammys. He also won the trophies for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop/R&B Act. “This album and this song was the most fun I’ve ever had making music,” the former One Direction singer said in one of his acceptance speeches.
Styles thus secured the prize in all four categories in which he was nominated. The indie rock duo Wet Leg (“Chaise Longue”), who received the “British” for best band and best new artist, also received four nominations. Grammy record winner Beyoncé also won two awards for International Artist and International Song of the Year, “Break My Soul”.
Alongside the Los Angeles Grammys, the Brit Awards are among the most important music awards in the world. Since last year, the “British” categories are no longer segregated by gender. Those responsible were responding to criticism from singer Sam Smith, who had identified as non-binary and complained that he could not be nominated in any category. Smith was in the running for Song of the Year with Kim Petras on Saturday night for the duet “Unholy,” but first had to let Styles go with “As It Was.” (sda/dpa)
