Militant Palestinians in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket into the Israeli border area on Saturday evening. The Israeli army said there had been a missile alert in Kibbutz Nachal Oz.
The missile was intercepted by the missile defense system. There were initially no reports of casualties or damage. A week ago, after a similar strike, the Israeli air force struck targets in the Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean Sea.
The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has been extremely tense for weeks. Nine Israelis and a Ukrainian have been killed in Palestinian attacks since the beginning of this year.
Killed in confrontation with settlers
A 27-year-old Palestinian was killed Saturday in a confrontation with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Health Ministry said the man suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. According to information, settlers had opened fire in the incident near the town of Salfit.
The Israeli military said it had received reports of violent clashes between dozens of Palestinians and Israeli civilians. “We are aware of reports of a Palestinian who was taken to a hospital before the arrival of Israeli soldiers and died from a gunshot wound,” the statement said. On arrival on the scene, soldiers fired into the air, ending the clashes.
Almost daily raids
Since the beginning of a wave of terror almost a year ago, the Israeli army has been carrying out raids on the West Bank on an almost daily basis. There are always confrontations. More than 40 Palestinians have been killed in fighting this year alone.
Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. Today, more than 600,000 Israeli settlers live there. The Palestinians claim the territories for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem as its capital.
About two million people live in the Gaza Strip in appalling conditions. Hamas seized power there in 2007. Israel then tightened a blockade of the coastal area, which is backed by Egypt. Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by the US, EU and Israel.
