As part of the investigation into the corruption scandal in the European Parliament, the judiciary issued an arrest warrant against another member of parliament.
The Belgian Social Democrat Marc Tarabella has been hit, a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office in Brussels confirmed to the German press agency on Saturday. He was already arrested on Friday.
Tarabella has been under research for quite some time. According to the OM, the 59-year-old is suspected of corruption, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization. In addition to Tarabella, Italian MP Andrea Cozzolino was also arrested on Friday in connection with the investigation.
restlessness and dismay
The corruption scandal is about the alleged influence on parliamentary decisions in Qatar and Morocco. In December, then Vice President Eva Kaili and several other suspects were arrested. They are also suspected of involvement in a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption.
The scandal has been causing unrest and horror in the European Parliament for weeks. To reduce the risk of further similar events, the chairmen of the parliamentary groups approved the first reforms for better anti-corruption measures last Wednesday.
Reporting obligations for meetings with diplomats and interest representatives from non-EU countries will be expanded. In addition, a ban on certain “groups of friends” with contacts to third countries and greater cooperation with national authorities are planned.
