After the violent death of African-American Tire Nichols as a result of a brutal police operation in the American city of Memphis, more details are coming to light.
On Wednesday it was announced that one of the police officers involved took mobile phone photos of the seriously injured man and then sent one or more. This is according to documents from an internal investigation by the police, which the newspaper “New York Times” published. Nichols, 29, died in hospital three days after surgery.
The documents detail the conduct of each police officer on the evening of January 7. Video showed the officer taking pictures of Nichols after he was brutally beaten by several officers following a traffic stop. According to the documents, he sent the images to several people, including outside the police.
The case caused horror across the country and sparked protests in many cities. Six officers have since been fired from the police force. Five of them – including the cop who took the photos – are on trial for manslaughter. In the state of Tennessee, this corresponds to an intermediate stage between murder and manslaughter. You risk long prison terms. Deadly police assaults are common in the United States. African Americans are disproportionately affected by this. (sda/dpa)
