The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced on Wednesday that it expects passenger numbers to be about three percent above 2019 levels by the end of the current year. In 2024, demand could therefore be four percent higher than in 2019. The organization predicts a “full and sustainable” recovery.
According to ICAO, by the end of the first quarter of the current year, most routes could reach pre-coronavirus levels on most routes. The organization also expects the industry to return to profitability in the fourth quarter of 2023 after three years of losses.
Due to the travel restrictions due to the corona pandemic, the number of air passengers in 2020 fell by 60 percent compared to the pre-corona year 2019. In 2021, the number was 49 percent below the value of 2019. Last year, passenger numbers amounted to 74 percent of 2019 volume. (sda/afp)
