It was the first assignment for John Walton of the US Coast Guard. On February 3, while he was practicing with his unit near the mouth of the Colombia River, a distress call came in. The white yacht “Sandpiper” dropped a “Mayday” – the Coast Guard immediately rushed to help with boats and a helicopter. Walton was able to prove his heroism during the spectacular rescue:
Because the sea was too turbulent for a rescue operation by boat – strong winds raised waves up to six meters high – Walton was deployed. He had just graduated from the Coast Guard Academy as a lifeguard.
Rescue at the last minute
Walton launched himself from the helicopter and swam to the yacht in the stormy seas. Just as he reached it, she was caught by a violent wave and capsized. Still, Walton managed to find the man who had fallen overboard and rescue it in the chopper in the chaos. Just a few hours after this heroic first mission, Walton celebrated his graduation with his comrades.
The story is already spectacular, but there is more to it. It didn’t end as well for the rescued man as it did for Walton. Although he suffered no serious injuries, he was immediately arrested by the police after the rescue. Among other things, he is suspected of stealing the “Sandpiper”. (lzo)
