The US has shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic Ocean. The US Department of Defense confirmed this to US broadcaster CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times and other media on Saturday. TV footage and eyewitness videos showed a white balloon being launched.
A few hours before the launch, US President Joe Biden commented on the espionage allegations surrounding the Chinese observation balloon over the United States. “We’ll take care of it,” Biden said on the sidelines of a private meeting in Syracuse, New York, according to reporters who traveled with him.
Several questions had been shouted at him. He was asked, among other things, to comment on China and whether the balloon should be shot down. According to eyewitnesses, the flying object was sighted on Saturday in the eastern United States, above the US state of North Carolina. This has not been officially confirmed.
The US Department of Defense announced the sighting of the Chinese balloon on Thursday evening. The balloon was sighted over the US state of Montana, Central America and also Missouri. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the “surveillance balloon” intrusion into US airspace “unacceptable” and “irresponsible”.
China firmly rejected allegations of espionage on Saturday, speaking of a research bubble that had been thrown off course by “force majeure”. Blinken has canceled a visit to Beijing planned for Sunday. (sda/dpa)
