Things are not going well for Manuel Neuer at the moment. The German national goalkeeper of FC Bayern Munich has been out for months after his injury during a ski tour. In mid-January, his old friend Toni Tapalovic was fired as FCB’s goalkeeping coach – a decision that deeply affected Neuer.
In an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, to be published on Saturday, Neuer described Tapalovic’s departure as “the most egregious thing I have experienced in my career”. He felt like “my heart was being ripped out,” explains Neuer. For him it was “a blow when I was already on the floor”.
Neuer will not return to the field for the time being. A broken leg suffered by the 36-year-old after his return from the World Cup during a ski tour on Lake Tegernsee put him out of action for several months. Bayern brought in Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach as a replacement.
