Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is convinced that his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro planned the storming of the government district in Brasília in January. In conversation with Brazilian broadcaster RedeTV! Lula said on Thursday: “Today I know and I say it loud and clear: this citizen (ex-President Bolsonaro) prepared the coup.”

He was “certain” that Bolsonaro was “actively involved and still trying to be part of it,” Lula said of his role in the violent attacks on Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace. According to Lula, his opponents would have already implemented it when he took office on January 1, but given the particularly high police presence and the large number of people in Brasília, they decided to do it later.

A Brazilian senator was even clearer on Thursday: Bolsonaro attended a meeting in December discussing how to prevent the transfer of power to Lula, said Senator Marcos Do Val, who was once a close confidant of Bolsonaro. The plan was to have the president of the electoral court, Alexandre de Moraes, make compromising statements and record him secretly, Do Val said.

The senator originally told Veja magazine that Bolsonaro himself proposed the conspiratorial plan. The senator later amended his version, stating that the former prime minister “remained silent” during the meeting. A former member of parliament also attended the meeting. The senator is now being questioned by the police.

De Moraes is the most powerful lawyer in Brazil and an enemy to Bolsonaro supporters. Currently, the Supreme Court judge is charged with preparing hundreds of charges against Bolsonaro supporters, who stormed and vandalized several government buildings in the capital Brasília after Lula’s inauguration on January 8.

Bolsonaro, who is also under investigation for the coup attempt, was not in the country at the time of the attack. He had flown to Florida before Lula’s inauguration and is currently seeking to renew his United States visa. Even before his election defeat, the far-right politician and ex-military had systematically tried to sow doubt about the outcome of the elections. He never officially acknowledged his loss to Lula.
