Following the warning of attacks and the closure of several European representations in the country, Turkey has summoned nine ambassadors. Among them was also the Swiss ambassador.
“The ambassadors of nine countries, including those who have suspended the work of their consulates under the pretext of the threat of terrorist attacks in Turkey, have been summoned to the foreign ministry,” the state-run Anadolu News Agency reported Thursday, citing diplomatic sources. .
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) confirmed the appointment to the Keystone-SDA news agency. The subject of the talks was the temporary closure of the representations of these countries in the current context. The FDFA and local representations would continue to monitor the situation closely. The FDFA continued to write that they are in contact with Turkish authorities and partner countries to assess the situation.
The nine affected countries are the US, France, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and Sweden, an unnamed diplomatic source told AFP.
Germany, the US and several other European countries had last week warned their citizens about an increased risk of attacks in Turkey and closed some of their offices early this week.
The German, French, Swiss and British consulates-general in Istanbul, among others, have been affected. The Swiss embassy in Ankara also closed its doors on Wednesday, while the German embassy in Ankara remained open for the time being. The warnings are based on Islamophobic actions in Europe, such as the burning of the Koran in Sweden.
Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu had previously made it clear that he suspected a foreign conspiracy behind the closures rather than a real attack risk. (sda/dpa)
