Italian and French police have arrested a ‘Ndrangheta mafioso in southeastern France who has been on the run for more than 16 years.
Special units of the Italian police found the 63-year-old in the city of Saint-Étienne, the Carabinieri announced on Thursday. The researchers have uncovered the fugitive’s support network during their investigations, which have been ongoing since 2019. French detectives eventually arrested him.
The mafioso belongs to the powerful Calabrian mafia ‘Ndrangheta. In 2006, a court in Italy sentenced him to life imprisonment for complicity in the 1991 murder of two brothers and the attempted murder of another man. The brothers were beaten to death in a fish shop. Their bodies have never been found. The crimes took place in the early 1990s, when the mafia clans were fighting a bloody war.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed his delight at the arrest and praised the cooperation between the countries’ authorities through Interpol. “The arrests of dangerous fugitives continue,” he said, according to a statement from his ministry. In mid-January, Italian police managed to arrest Matteo Messina Denaro in Sicily, the Cosa Nostra mafia boss who had been on the run for three decades.
