Reports: Another US police officer released after brutal “The rain must stop!” operation: Dead after record rain in New Zealand

Another officer has been fired after the brutal police operation against a black man in the American city of Memphis. Various American media reported this, including broadcaster CNN and the ‘New York Times’ on Monday, citing the police in Memphis. Memphis police were not immediately available for comment.

According to media reports, it is about a white police officer. What role this officer played in the operation is still unclear. Five black police officers directly involved in the operation had previously been fired. Charges were filed against her. The five men are charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Background is the death of 29-year-old Tire Nichols. The young man was brutally beaten by police officers during a traffic stop in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 7. Three days later, he succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The case has sparked protests across the US and a new debate about police brutality against African Americans.

A coalition of black Democratic congressmen had invited the Nichols family to be guests at US President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address in both houses of Congress next week. According to a member of the convention group, the family accepted the invitation. (sda/dpa)
