The US Republicans have confirmed their party leader Ronna McDaniel for the fourth time. At the Conservative Party’s winter meeting in Dana Point, California, 111 of 168 delegates re-elected McDaniel as head of the Republican National Committee (RNC). 51 deputies voted for their most promising challenger, lawyer Harmeet Dhillon. Prominent pillow entrepreneur and election conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell received only four votes.
“If we all unite, the Democrats will hear from us in 2024,” McDaniel said after her reelection, ahead of next year’s presidential election. Former President Donald Trump, who is considered a supporter of McDaniel, congratulated the party leader on various online networks immediately after her re-election.
Critics in the party had previously accused the 49-year-old McDaniel of being partly responsible for the Republicans’ disappointing performance in last November’s midterm elections. Trench warfare has long shocked Republicans. This became visible with the chaotic election of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the US House of Representatives in early January. (aeg/sda/afp)
