About three months after the attack on the husband of top American politician Nancy Pelosi, the American justice department has released the video recordings of the police. Video shows the assailant using a hammer to attack 82-year-old Paul Pelosi at the couple’s San Francisco home. In addition to the video, parts of Pelosi’s emergency call were also made public on Friday. Several media outlets had previously requested the release of the material.

Pelosi’s husband was attacked and seriously injured just days before the US congressional elections in October. He had to undergo surgery after the attack for a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. The perpetrator himself targeted the powerful Democrat Pelosi, but did not find her during the robbery. After the attack, right-wing conspiracy theories spread and individual Republicans used the attack for campaign mockery.
Bodycam recording of the police officer:
The video now shows Pelosi wrestling with the assailant for a hammer. He was able to snatch the 82-year-old’s hammer and brutally beat his victim with it. Finally the police intervene. You see Pelosi lying motionless on the floor. The emergency services can eventually overpower the attacker.
The man is suspected of, among other things, attempted murder, burglary, assault and deprivation of liberty of an elderly person and threatening a civil servant. According to court documents, the man planned to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and break her kneecaps. He wanted to force the Democrat into a wheelchair to show other congressmen that their “actions have consequences,” he allegedly told police. Paul Pelosi was released from the hospital in early November and has since returned to the public eye. (saw/sda/dpa)
