According to Palestinian sources, four people were killed in an Israeli military operation in Jenin in the West Bank. At least 13 others were injured, the health ministry in Ramallah said Thursday.
Among the dead was a woman. According to the Palestinian rescue service Red Crescent, the situation on the spot was unclear in the morning. It’s hard to get to the wounded. An Israeli army spokesman confirmed only in the morning that an operation was underway in the Palestinian city.
The situation in the West Bank has been tense for some time. Since a series of attacks last year, the Israeli army has been carrying out more raids there. Deadly confrontations take place again and again. Jenin is considered a stronghold of militant Palestinians. So far this year, 21 Palestinians have been killed in connection with military operations or their own attacks, including five young people. Last year there were 172 Palestinians, more than at any time since 2006.
In 1967, Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem, among other places. Today, more than 600,000 Israeli settlers live there. The Palestinians claim the territories for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem as its capital. (aeg/sda/dpa)
