Following new EU sanctions against Iran, Tehran has imposed counter-sanctions. As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday, a total of 34 persons and organizations have been put on a sanctions list.
The punitive measures include entry bans and the freezing of possible assets in Iran. Members of the European Parliament and two German officers have been hit. Iran accuses them of “supporting terrorism” and “meddling in internal affairs”.
EU foreign ministers took new punitive measures in Brussels on Monday for the serious human rights violations surrounding the recent wave of protests in Iran. These met with 37 people and organizations – including the Minister of Sports and Youth Hamid Sajadi, parliamentarians, members of the army and the umbrella organization of moral guardians.
The reason for the nationwide protests in Iran was the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody on September 16 after being arrested by vice squad for violating Islamic dress code. The protests against the repressive government and Islamic rule system have plunged the political leadership into one of the most serious crises in decades.
