7 dead after gun violence in California – suspected gunman arrested “They threw grenades while drunk”: this is how Russian soldiers call from the front

In the US state of California, several people have once again become victims of deadly gun violence. This time, a rural community in the north of the state on the west coast was affected. Seven people were killed at two crime scenes in Half Moon Bay. Another person was seriously injured, police said Monday evening (local time). However, the victim’s condition is now stable, it was said on Tuesday.

The suspected shooter has been arrested, Sheriff Christina Corpus said at a news conference. It involved a 66-year-old man, she said on Tuesday. Authorities had originally listed the man’s age as 67. Investigators believe the act of violence was related to the perpetrator’s workplace and that the man acted alone, Corpus said. The perpetrator was an employee of the mushroom farm, the first of the two crime scenes.

There, the police found four bodies and the seriously injured victim. At a second crime scene nearby, three people were killed by gunfire. The only connection between the victims and the perpetrator that investigators are aware of so far is the alleged shooter’s workplace. After the crime, the suspect drove his vehicle to a police station and was arrested in the parking lot. The crimes took place in an agricultural area south of San Francisco.

US President Joe Biden called the act a “senseless act of gun violence” and promised the community the government’s full support. “The scourge of gun violence across America” calls for tougher gun laws, the Democratic president wrote.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also expressed his displeasure. “Tragedy upon tragedy,” the Democrat wrote on Twitter. He did not meet those injured in the Monterey Park incident at the hospital until Monday, when he was informed of the next shooting in Half Moon Bay, the politician said. Newsom has long advocated for stricter gun laws.

Gun violence and deadly attacks of this magnitude are sadly common in the United States. Last weekend, a gunman opened fire at a dance hall during a Chinese New Year celebration in Southern California. Ten people died at the crime scene in Monterey Park and another victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Monday. The alleged perpetrator, a 72-year-old man, was found dead in his van on Sunday. It was said that he committed suicide when a special police unit surrounded his car.

Meanwhile, a shooting at a youth center in the state of Iowa in the American Midwest left two people dead. According to the police, the victims were 16 and 18 years old. The suspected perpetrator is an 18-year-old. (sda/dpa)
