The Japanese macaques are special monkeys. There is the fact that, unlike most monkeys, they do not live in a tropical area, but in the Japanese Alps, a harsh and cold environment. In addition, the monkeys have special eating habits, especially in winter, as now confirmed by new video material:
brown trout from the rivers
Researchers had previously been able to show in the feces of the Japanese macaques that the monkeys feed on fish. However, the monkeys have never been seen eating fish or even catching fish from the mountain rivers.
A scientific team made up of scientists from the University of Birmingham, Matsumoto’s Shinshu University and Tsukuba University has now published recordings of the macaques catching and eating brown trout in a study.
fish instead of bamboo
Especially in winter, the macaques’ normal diet – bamboo and woody bark – is not available in sufficient quantities. The fish are a survival strategy of primates. In addition, the macaques absorb valuable proteins from the fish. (fwe)
