Prince Harry tells his truth in his biography. But there are differences and even mistakes. Is the 38-year-old’s memory to blame?

Prince Harry’s book raises some questions. His memoirs have been on the market since January 10 under the German title “Reserve” – and, as expected, are causing quite a stir. Because the 38-year-old has never spoken so openly about his life as now.

These include allegations against his family, his love for actress Meghan Markle and his time as a soldier. However, a careful reading of some passages raises doubts about the credibility of the descriptions.

Where was he when Queen Mum died?

For example, in Harry’s description of the events surrounding the death of his great-grandmother, Queen Mum, on March 30, 2002. According to his own statement, he attended Eton boarding school, which he attended at the time. “The call reached me a few days later at Eton while I was studying. I wish I remembered whose voice was on the other end of the line; a bailiff, I presume. It was just before Easter, the day was bright and warm. The rays of light that fell diagonally through my window were vividly colored.” On the telephone he was told: “Your Royal Highness, the Queen Mother has passed away.”

But was Harry really at school? Photos show that the day before the 101-year-old died, he was on a skiing holiday in Klosters, Switzerland, with his brother Prince William and their father, now King Charles III.

Hours after the announcement, a spokesperson for Charles issued a press release about his grandmother’s passing: “[Charles] has been destroyed. His only wish is to go home as soon as possible.” According to reports from the time, he flew back to England with his sons a day later.

historical errors

Eton College, which William attended with Harry, was founded in 1440 by Henry VI. Founded. Harry describes the then King of England in his book as his “ancestor” and “great great great grandfather”.

However, this relationship is not historically correct. Henry is the last monarch of the House of Lancaster – the British family today descends from the House of Windsor. Henry was killed in 1471, his only son Edward, then 17 and childless, was killed in battle. With that, the male line was wiped out. Harry is therefore not a direct descendant of Henry.

Wrong flight?

Shortly before his wedding to actress Meghan Markle in 2018, the couple wanted to bring their father from Mexico to England to protect him from the media. “Air New Zealand, First Class, booked and paid for by Meg,” Harry writes in his book.

However, a statement from Air NZ said: “We have never offered flights between Mexico and the United Kingdom.” In addition, the company does not offer seats in First Class. “We only have Business Premier.”

Inconsistencies on the first date with Meghan

Harry and his wife Duchess Meghan seem to disagree on one thing: what exactly was Meghan wearing when they first met at Soho House? “She was wearing a black sweater, jeans, heels. I knew nothing about clothes, but I knew they were smart,” Harry recalled in his memoir.

Meghan, on the other hand, told the ITV documentary “Queen of the World” in 2018 that she wore a blue dress. She had a piece of it sewn into her wedding dress: “It’s the fabric of the dress I wore on our first date.”

Apparently one of them messed up the first two dates. Because Harry remembers “a nice blue slip dress with white pinstripes” she wore when they met for the second time.

Princess Diana’s last gift

The alleged last gift from Princess Diana, who died in 1997, to her son is also suspicious. “It was an Xbox. I was happy. I loved video games.” Diana bought the game console shortly before her death in August and the gift was presented to Harry on his 13th birthday, about two weeks later in September.

However, the first Xbox was not launched in the US until four years later. It is quite possible that the prince made a mistake and actually meant a PlayStation, which was first sold in Japan from 1994.

Harry has amnesia

However, apparently Harry himself is also aware that his memories may be faulty. Of Diana’s gift, he explains, “The story has appeared in many accounts of my life as a gospel of sorts, and I have no idea if it’s true. Dad said Mom hurt her head but got brain damage?”

He speaks of a kind of ‘defense mechanism’ in his memory. “Since Mom was gone, my memory has been deliberately fragmentary. I had no interest in changing that, because memory equaled pain. Not remembering was a blessing.”

Meghan on racism in the royal family

All his life he has told others that he cannot remember his mother and his past, but the “whole truth” is that his memory is “extinct”. “But now, with the help of months of therapy, it started shaking, shaking, stuttering,” he recalls the treatment Meghan advised him in December 2016 after an outburst of anger.

Royal pundits berate the wrong details, says author Hugo Vickers: “If he makes mistakes like this – what else did he do wrong, you ask.”

But there are also readers who forgive Harry for minor inconsistencies, reports “Page Six”. On the Xbox, one Twitter user writes, “It’s easy to mix up names and he was 13 years old at the time, that’s more than 20 years ago after a major traumatic loss.” In his opinion, one should not fixate on every little detail.
