The conservation organization “Wildlife Conservation Society” has published impressive video footage showing thousands of macaw turtles hatching. South America’s largest freshwater turtles can be seen making their way from the beach to the water in the Amazon:
These recordings were made between the end of December 2022 and the beginning of January 2023 on the beaches of the Rio Guaporé. The river flows along the border of Bolivia and Brazil. The researchers of the Wildlife Conservation Society see the large hatching as a success: according to the organization, it was a record number of turtles hatching.
Endangered species
As the “Wildlife Conservation Society” reports, there used to be millions of macaw turtles in the Amazon. Habitat destruction – caused by deforestation, oil production and grazing land – severely decimated the animals’ population.
The record number of newly hatched macaw turtles is therefore cause for celebration for the organization. Wildlife Conservation Society protects beaches for turtle nesting and works with local communities to protect the animals. (fwe)
