According to unanimous media reports from Germany, the German Defense Minister and SPD politician Christine Lambrecht has decided to step down from her position. The newspaper “Bild” speaks of “several people who are aware of the events”. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reports, citing the environment of the minister, that Lambrecht wants to resign next week. ntv also confirms the reports from SPD circles.
The initiative to resign came from Lambrecht himself, it said. She believes her ministry needs a fresh start. The exact date of their planned withdrawal has not yet been determined. A spokesman for the politician told the AFP agency these were “rumours, which we do not comment on”.
The defense minister has been under increasing pressure recently: a video she shared on social media on New Year’s Eve provoked sharp criticism, among other things. The coalition of CSU and CDU in the opposition then called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to dismiss the defense minister immediately. Lambrecht had already been irritated several times. Malfunctions in the Bundeswehr – most recently the failure of the Puma tanks – had also attracted criticism.
