Reports: Secret documents from Biden’s time as deputy discovered in office Reports: Secret documents from Biden’s time as deputy discovered during tenure

According to media reports, classified government documents from his time as Vice President have been discovered in an office of US President Joe Biden.

The documents were found while evacuating Biden’s offices at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington in November, US broadcasters CBS and CNN reported Monday (local time). The center is part of the University of Pennsylvania — Biden had an office at the Penn Biden Center after leaving the office of vice president in 2017-2019.

The documents have been handed over to the National Archives, according to US media, citing the White House. The Ministry of Justice is now investigating the incident. According to broadcaster CNN, about a dozen documents are involved, including papers with the highest level of confidentiality.

The contents of the documents remained unclear. They were stored in a locked cabinet together with personal documents. Democrat Biden served as vice president under then-President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.

The find is particularly explosive given a similar recent case: ex-President Donald Trump is being investigated for taking secret government documents to his private estate after leaving the White House. Trump could have been criminalized for prosecution.

The FBI searched the Florida estate in August and seized several classified documents, some with the highest level of secrecy. It is still unclear whether Trump can ultimately be indicted. (sda/dpa)
