After his spectacular escape from a prison in northern Mexico, the boss of a criminal gang has been murdered.
Ernesto Alberto Piñón de la Cruz, also known as “El Neto”, was seriously wounded in a shootout with security forces in the city of Chihuahua and died shortly afterwards, the Chihuahua state government said Thursday. Investigators found eight rifles in his armored car. “El Neto” was a leader of the Los Mexicles gang, which serves as the armed arm of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel.

The gang leader escaped from a prison in Ciudad Juárez on the US border on New Year’s Day when members of his gang attacked the prison. They drove up in armored vehicles and opened fire. Ten guards and four prisoners were killed in the attack and at least 13 others were injured. At least 24 prisoners are said to have fled during the fighting. (aeg/sda/dpa)
