The series of defeats for Kevin McCarthy continues: the Republican has failed in the sixth election attempt as Speaker of the House of Representatives. This followed the result of the oral vote on Wednesday, which still had to be formally endorsed by the chairman of the session in the parliamentary chamber. McCarthy had already failed to get the required number of votes in previous elections because several party members refused to support him.
Once again, the Republicans had nominated Congressman Byron Donalds as the opposing candidate. In the oral vote, the Republican received an additional 20 votes. “This city is broken. And I want to fix it,” Republican Congressman Scott Perry said before the vote. You couldn’t do that if you just got in line and did what everyone else had done for you. That’s why he nominates Donald’s as an opponent.
Republican Kat Cammack nominated McCarthy and appealed to her party to finally get behind the 57-year-old. The people in her constituency would tell her it was time to get to work. Everything else is unacceptable. For McCarthy, the proceedings are a historic defeat and a public notoriety. (sda/dpa)
