A video is currently circulating on Twitter showing an elderly woman being dragged off a bus in Russia after discussing the war in Ukraine with the other passengers. She had been criticizing what the others clearly didn’t like.
The woman is also referred to as “Hohol” and “Banderistin” by several other passengers in the video. These are both derogatory terms for Ukrainians. “Hohol” is derived from “Khokhol” and literally means a sheaf or bunch of grain stalks. As a term for Ukrainians, it may originally have referred to the tufts of hair worn by the Cossacks, the so-called chub.
“Banderists” were the followers of former Ukrainian National Socialist and partisan leader Stepan Bandera. He was a convinced fascist and anti-Semite.
For many users on Twitter, the video is a sign that a large part of the Russian people still support the regime and the offensive war in Ukraine. Although it is a single man who forcibly drags the old woman off the bus, she receives no help from bystanders. (lzo)
