The Berlin police on Tuesday evening published new information about the New Year’s Eve riots. Accordingly, 145 people were briefly arrested over the riots, which also saw firefighters and medical personnel attacked. After the investigation was completed, all suspects were released.
Most of those arrested are men, says a police spokesperson. All in all, they came from 18 different countries, the majority of which – 45 – had German citizenship. 27 would be from Afghanistan, 21 from Syria. The police initially spoke of 159 arrests, but have now reduced this number because of double counting. According to the spokesman, the figures should still be considered “preliminary”.
While the suspects have been released, a total of 355 cases have been filed against them for public disorder, assaulting and resisting law enforcement and rescue workers, dangerous bodily harm and causing an explosive explosion. (con)
