It is the sweetest story of the turn of the year, that of the walrus Thor, the attraction par excellence in England in recent days.

The walrus, normally navigating arctic waters, came to rest in the harbor of Scarborough, England, on Saturday. As a result, the city canceled the New Year’s fireworks so as not to disturb the animal, following experts’ advice.

Thor moved on before the new year arrived, and according to an animal rights activist, the walrus is heading north.

We reported:

Thor has now made another stopover, since Monday afternoon the animal has been relaxing in Blyth, a town also on the northeast coast of England, two hours’ drive from Scarborough. Maritime experts are sure that it is the same walrus as the “BBC” writes.

According to experts, the animal looks fit and healthy, but the fact that walruses such as Thor occur in European waters at all may also be a result of climate change. This leads to the loss of sea ice, which walruses use to rest or digest their meals. Seeing walruses this far south is not a good sign, the BBC said.

Thor will probably remain an attraction though, the animal has already attracted thousands of people in Scarborough, but slept most of the time. (first)
