The U.S. Capitol Bombing Commission has officially withdrawn its subpoena against ex-President Donald Trump following the release of its final report. The chairman of the Democratic committee, Bennie Thompson, informed Trump’s lawyers about this in a letter, various American media, including the “New York Times” and the broadcaster CNN, reported Thursday evening. Thompson justified the move by saying the panel was done with its job. In view of this, the information to which the summons related could not be further investigated.
The newly elected Congress meets next Tuesday and Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives. The democratically led investigative committee there is then dissolved.
It was only after months of work and after numerous hearings with Trump confidential advisers that the panel decided to summon the ex-president himself last October. This was a rare escalation for an ex-president. Trump fought back with a lawsuit. He now counted the withdrawal of the summons as a success. On the social media platform Truth Social, which he co-founded, Trump wrote, “They probably did it because they knew I wasn’t doing anything wrong.”
Shortly before Christmas, the commission presented its final report, in which it attributed much of the responsibility for the attack on the Capitol to Trump. Among other things, the panel recommended excluding Trump from another presidency. In its most recent public hearing, the panel also recommended criminal charges against Trump on four counts.
Trump supporters violently stormed the seat of parliament in Washington on January 6, 2021. Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Earlier, Trump had told his supporters in a speech that he had been robbed of a victory by massive electoral fraud. Five people were killed in the riots. (saw/sda/dpa)
