Terrorist militia Al-Shabaab loses important province in Somalia Cough syrup company responsible for the deaths of 70 children in the Gambia

The Somali army says it has recaptured the last stronghold of the Islamist terrorist militia Al-Shabaab in Central Somalia’s Central Shabelle province.

“Our forces now also have full control of Runirgod district,” Abdullahi Ali Anod, spokesman for the Somali army, said in Mogadishu on Thursday. The reconquest of the key region north of the capital is a major victory for the people of Somalia.

The country on the Horn of Africa with about 16 million inhabitants has been shaken by attacks and other violence for years. The government in Mogadishu has been conducting a military offensive against Al-Shabaab for several months now. The Islamist terrorists control large parts of Somalia’s central region and the south of the country.

The Central Shabelle region is of great agricultural importance to Somalia. Somalia has been struggling with extreme drought for years. According to UN data, nearly half of the country’s people do not have enough to eat. The government accuses al-Shabaab of exacerbating the country’s hunger crisis by destroying vital infrastructure and launching attacks on markets. (saw/sda/dpa)
