It is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj’s first trip abroad since the start of the war – and was until recently a closely guarded secret. Now it’s coming true: Selenskyj flew in from Poland on a US government plane. According to the American television channel CNN, American security personnel were on board.

Because he could not fly directly from Kiev for security reasons, the airline started a secret train journey to Poland late on Tuesday. The following morning, he arrived in the southern Polish town of Peremyshl, where he was spotted with US ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink at the train station, according to footage released by private broadcaster TVN.

In Poland, he then boarded a US government plane that landed around noon on Wednesday at the US military airfield at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, nearly 12 miles southeast of Washington. From there we first went to the Blair House, where foreign guests are traditionally accommodated shortly after landing.

Photos posted on social media show the Ukrainian flag on the building across from the White House. Selenskyj then drove the short distance to Biden’s official residence in the car.

The overview of the visit:

“Of course, the trip was ultimately his (Zelenskyj’s) decision. He concluded that all safety parameters have been met,” said a US government official familiar with the matter. According to observations made by Twitter users, the government jet was being watched by Western warships and planes as it flew across the Atlantic. (t online)
