According to the local newspaper The Sun Times News, the woman from Waterloo, Michigan, has filed an application for the Guinness Book of Records. In this, the age of “Peanut” is given as 20 years. She had already completed a corresponding form online and received a prompt reply from the UK publisher.
Now she has to prove her age. She has already collected photos and must also provide witness statements. “I hope they will all confirm what I said, as will my niece, who is now in her thirties and has loved ‘Peanut’ since she was a teenager,” said the owner.
The cheerful American came into contact with chickens in the 1990s, initially rescuing poultry from the area. It soon became a chicken farm and many people brought their other animals, she told the local paper. Including the parents of «Peanut», a Nankin rooster and a Mille Fleur hen. One day in the 2000s, while cleaning a nest, she saw an egg that had not hatched a chick.
She actually wanted to throw it in the water because she thought maybe it was rotten. “But when the hand with the egg reached my ear just before the toss, I heard a chirp,” she says. But the mother hen had rejected the chick, so she took care of it. Now it never leaves her side.
Chickens usually live between five and ten years, depending on breed and husbandry. The previous record holder for the oldest chicken is “Matilda”, who lived in the US with her owners Keith and Donna Barton from 1990 to 2006 and would have been between 15 and 16 years old.
