A European arrest warrant has been issued against the woman. Law enforcement officials charged her with corruption, money laundering and involvement in a criminal organization. Until now, she and her daughter are under house arrest, whose extradition will be decided by the court on Tuesday.
According to the Italian news agency Ansa, the defenders of the 67-year-old want to appeal against the decision. Accordingly, before the announcement, they stated that their client would have to go to prison if extradited and that this meant a tightening of the previous measure, house arrest. In this context, they spoke of “violating the European Convention on Human Rights”. Panzeri’s wife said at the hearing that there had never been a holiday worth €100,000 and that she knew nothing about her husband’s affairs.
Her husband Antonio Panzeri is already imprisoned in Belgium. The former Social Democratic MEP is considered one of the central figures in the corruption scandal surrounding bribes from the Gulf states of Qatar and Morocco. In the case, the now former vice-president of the EU parliament, the Greek Eva Kaili, and her partner were arrested.
