The Berlin traffic information center tweeted that Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, where the hotel with the aquarium is located, was closed. “There is a lot of water on the road. So far, the cause is still unclear.” The place is very close to Alexanderplatz in Berlin with the TV tower. The Berlin police are asking to avoid the area on a large scale.
A hotel guest posted a video of the hotel on Twitter. He speaks of an “explosion” of the aquarium. In the hotel itself there is apparently chaos, there is destruction to be seen.
A spokesman for the fire service says to the DPA that it will be checked whether there have been any injuries. The aquarium had burst for an initially unknown cause. The water flowed into Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse. It should also be checked whether the underground car park is affected.
The CityQuartier DomAquarée is a center with hotel and residential complexes and shops in Berlin-Mitte. The huge cylindrical aquarium is 16 meters high and contains about 1,500 tropical fish. Visitors can ride a panoramic elevator through the tourist attraction.
