According to «Arte TRACKS», Kevin MacLeod is the most listened to composer in the world, five billion people are said to know his music. Hardly anyone knows his face and his name. Time to fill that gap.
MacLeod began releasing his royalty-free music in 1996. There are now over 2000 compositions available for download from his website.
It costs nothing, only MacLeod’s name must be specified when using it. This so-called Creative Commons 3.0 license even gives you the right to use the music for commercial purposes.
Visibility is power
That’s the strategy of the Wisconsin composer. In an interview with Arte TRACKS he said: “The more my music gets stolen, the more powerful I become, because that’s how it gets used in different media and heard by even more people. The biggest enemy of the average composer is not theft, but lack to visibility.”
The strategy appears to be paying off. One of his most famous compositions, “Monkeys spinning monkeys”, has now been used more than 27 million times on TikTok – and the number is still rising. There is also a documentary about him. (lzo)
