UK Justice Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab has come under further pressure over allegations of bullying. A Downing Street government spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had launched an investigation into five other allegations against Raab.
An independent commission had previously been commissioned to investigate three previous allegations of bullying. Raab rejected this at the time, but promised to cooperate and accept “any outcome”. Downing Street said on Wednesday it would await the outcome of the investigation before deciding on further consequences.
Several media outlets, citing former employees of Raab, had reported a harsh tone and even a “culture of fear” in the ministries under Raab’s leadership. Former top British official Simon McDonald described the minister’s leadership style as “demeaning and aggressive”.
Raab can look back on years of cabinet experience. He was initially appointed as Brexit minister by former Prime Minister Theresa May. Under May’s successor Boris Johnson, he became foreign minister from 2019 to 2021, later justice minister and deputy prime minister. Sunak recalled the 48-year-old to these two posts after being elected prime minister.
Raab is already the second member of Sunak’s cabinet to be in trouble over allegations of bullying. Secretary of State Gavin Williamson was forced to resign earlier due to similar allegations.
