Grant Wahl († 48) has passed away. The American football journalist dies while covering the World Cup in Qatar. Grant Wahl was an influential American journalist. He wrote for CBS Sports and NBC News, among others. It was the eighth World Cup he covered. His brother, Eric Wahl, has a terrible suspicion.
Grant Wahl collapsed as he reported on Argentina’s quarter-final victory over the Netherlands on Friday. He collapsed in the middle of the Lusail Iconic Stadium. He was then taken to a nearby hospital. Then came the news: Grant Wahl is dead. It is unclear whether he died in hospital or in transit.
Killed over pro-LGBTQ protest?
His brother Eric believes he was murdered. “My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I’m Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay,” he says in a video that he publishes on his Instagram account.
He says: “I am the reason he wore the rainbow shirt at the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he had received death threats. I don’t think my brother just died. I think he was murdered. And I just ask for help.”
Grant Wahl was not allowed to enter the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium for a World Cup match because he was wearing a rainbow shirt. He was held for 30 minutes. Then he was allowed into the stadium.
His brother says of the connections to his death, “We’re still trying to figure it out. He collapsed in the stadium, was revived, taken to the hospital and died, according to Celine.” Celine R. Gounder was the wife of the deceased.
Did Grant Wahl suffer from bronchitis?
However, contrary to what his brother said, Grant Wahl did not appear to be in good health. He wrote on the Substack platform on Monday that he had visited a hospital in Qatar. “My body finally let me down. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress, and high work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote.
And further: “What had been a cold for the past ten days became a more serious matter on the night of the US-Netherlands game and I felt my upper chest develop a new pressure and discomfort.”
Then he makes it clear that he doesn’t have Covid and tests himself regularly. He writes, “But I went to the medical clinic at the main media center today and was told I probably have bronchitis. They gave me an antibiotic and a strong cough syrup and a few hours later I feel a little better. But still: no bueno.” (EU)
