The Ukrainian city of Mariupol has been held by the Russian army for more than eight months. Since then, hardly any reliable information has come out of the city. Observers and Western intelligence services try to interpret what is happening in the city with the help of satellite images.
Observers want to recognize a wide variety of processes in the city from the satellite images. Taking the city, the Russian army destroyed the «Drama Theater». The images went around the world – also because many citizens had apparently sought protection in the theater.
In recent months, the Russian military has now claimed to be restoring the building. However, as new satellite photos show, only a screen was built around the still-ruined theater.
Satellite images are also circulating showing that the Mariupol cemetery appears to have grown enormously in the period since the occupation. (lzo)
