Chinese President Xi Jinping met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia. The de facto ruler of the Gulf state received Xi at his palace in the capital Riyadh on Thursday, state news agency SPA reported.

There are no further details about the content of the conversation. The Chinese head of state would then meet King Salman.

In a newspaper article published in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, Xi Jinping wrote that he wanted to usher in “a new era for relations between China and the Arab world.” Thanks to their mineral resources, industries and construction services, the Arab states are “countries of enormous potential”.

Relations between Riyadh and Beijing, once rather tenuous, have deepened in recent years. China is now an important trading partner for Saudi Arabia. Beijing, in turn, is heavily dependent on Saudi oil.

Xi Jinping’s journey follows five months after US President Joe Biden visited the kingdom. He had reaffirmed the US leadership claim in the region. Relations between Washington and Riyadh are currently deteriorating. (cpf/sda/dpa)
