Experienced surfers should have an idea of what the term “sneaker wave” is all about. And a few anglers, beach walkers or bathing enthusiasts have certainly been introduced to the infamous waves.
“Sneaker waves” are described by the US National Meteorological Service as follows: “Sneaker waves are potentially deadly waves that reach further than expected onto the beach and overwhelm the unwitting.” This video shows the enormous power such inconspicuous waves can have:
Cold water and surprise effect
“Sneak” means “sneak up”. The US weather service warns of the “crawling” waves, especially on the coasts in the northwest of the country. Especially the cold water and the element of surprise make these types of waves so dangerous.
The weather service advises never to turn your back on the water and to consult the weather service before going to the beach. Also look at the sea 10 to 20 minutes before you want to get on the water and familiarize yourself with the waves. (fwe)
