The American news magazine “TIME” has named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian spirit Person of the Year on Wednesday. Editor-in-chief Edward Edelfels justified the decision with the following:
“Whether the battle for Ukraine fills us with hope or fear, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has moved the world in a way we haven’t seen in decades. In the weeks after the Russian bombs fell on February 24, his decision to leave Kiev was not fleeing but staying and seeking support is crucial, from his first 40-second Instagram post on Feb. 25, showing his cabinet and civil society intact and in place, to the daily speeches he delivers from a distance held in front of parliaments, the World Bank and the…Grammy Awards, the president of Ukraine was everywhere.”
The way Zelenskyj led an information offensive fundamentally changed the geopolitical game. According to Edwards, this year’s Person of the Year decision was probably the clearest ever.(cpf)
