Leading Republican Mitch McConnell avoided sharp criticism of the ex-president following Donald Trump’s recent statement on the US Constitution.

“What I’m saying is it would be pretty hard to be sworn in as president if you’re not willing to respect the Constitution,” the Republican minority leader in the US Senate said Tuesday (local time). He had been asked if he could rule out endorsing Trump if he were elected as the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election.

Over the weekend, Trump reiterated the sufficiently refuted claim that fraud robbed him of victory in the 2020 presidential election. On the social media platform Truth Social, which he founded, the 76-year-old wrote: “A massive fraud of this kind and magnitude allows for the repeal of all rules, ordinances and articles, including those in the Constitution.” Trump suggested that the 2020 election should be repeated if he was not declared the legitimate winner.

As a result, Democrats and some Trump critics in the Republican ranks reacted with outrage. However, his party’s leadership did not condemn Trump’s statement — and has tacitly overlooked many of his provocations in the past. McConnell has previously dodged the question of whether he would support Trump if he won the party’s presidential race.

The 80-year-old has repeatedly criticized Trump, but has never publicly broken up with him. Trump regularly verbally abuses McConnell and insults him in his speeches as an “old crow”.
