Calls for targeted attacks on paramilitary units on motorcycles, which play an important role in suppressing protests, circulated on the Telegram news channel. In recent weeks, protesters have dumped oil on roads or erected roadblocks to make it more difficult for security forces to advance.
Mass violence by the police and security forces has severely curtailed peaceful protests in Iran. Demonstrators are therefore increasingly organizing spontaneous meetings to express their dissatisfaction with the Islamic Republic. Internet blocks also make organization difficult.
About 470 demonstrators have been killed since the protests began, according to human rights activists. The systemic uprisings were triggered by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September. The young woman died in police custody after being arrested by the moral guards for violating the Islamic dress code.
