Bicycles can now be parked in car parking spaces

There is excitement in the auto nation of Germany. At least in the capital. From January 1, bicycles in Berlin Velos can be parked free of charge in public parking garages. Even if motorists had to pay a parking fee to park their car. The Senate wants to create free space on the sidewalks where pedestrians have to share space with parked bicycles, e-scooters and mopeds.

But the new rules cause problems. The German Automobile Club ADAC criticized the Spiegel’s plan to keep sidewalks clear. However, this should not be “run on the back of drivers without showing them solutions at the same time”.

In addition, according to the report, many motorists fear that a single bicycle could block an entire parking space. And that in a big city, where parking spaces are known to be scarce.

The problem would not be solved, but made worse

The Senate Chancellery made it clear via Twitter that bicycles should be “stored as space-efficiently as possible”, but the ADAC stands by its rejection. Motorists would now have to search even longer before they can park their car. The association also fears that more cars could be damaged by incorrect parking of bicycles and scooters.

In general, the Senate has promised to create space specifically for scooters, according to the ADAC. This measure only postpones the space problem, but does not solve it. The Berlin Senate is “more than ever obliged” to finally act here. (Hi)
