According to the Congolese army, 50 civilians were killed by the M23 rebels during fighting in eastern Congo. The fighting had already taken place on Wednesday, the army announced on Thursday. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s communications minister also said the rebels had been forcibly recruiting civilians in the region.

Goma residents take part in a civil society-driven protest against the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the current conflict between government forces and M23 rebels.

Since the end of October, violence between the army and the rebel group M23 in eastern Congo has escalated again. The M23 movement consists of former Congolese army soldiers who formed a rebel group in 2012. According to the United States, about 130 different armed groups are said to be active in eastern DR Congo; many of them are concerned with controlling the valuable natural resources.

Peace negotiations are actually taking place in the region in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. The talks are expected to conclude on December 3. (sda/dpa)
